Cheviot Learning Trust Appoints Glen Whitehead as Interim CEO
Cheviot Learning Trust is delighted to announce the appointment of Glen Whitehead, current Chantry Middle School Headteacher, as Interim Chief Executive Officer, beginning in September 2026.
Glen brings a wealth of experience, a deep understanding of the Trust and its schools, and a strong commitment to the communities we serve. Having been part of Cheviot Learning Trust for several years, he has already played an important role in the success and development of some of our schools.
Throughout his career, Glen has worked across first, primary, and middle schools, developing extensive experience in school leadership and improvement. Within Cheviot Learning Trust, he has served as Headteacher at both Stobhillgate First School and Chantry Middle School, where he has led with a clear focus on high-quality education and strong outcomes for pupils. Beyond his own schools, he has also supported leaders across the North East as a Specialist Leader of Education and holds the National Professional Qualification in Executive Leadership.
Glen grew up on the North Yorkshire coast before moving to Newcastle to study Politics at Newcastle University, where he later trained to become a teacher. Now living in Northumberland with his young family, he has developed a strong connection to the region and the communities the Trust serves.
Speaking about his appointment, Glen said:
“My motivation is simple. It comes from a genuine belief in what Cheviot Learning Trust can be. I've been part of Cheviot Learning Trust for a number of years, and I've seen first-hand the commitment of the staff, the strength of our schools, and the difference we make to children and families in our communities. When the opportunity arose, it was clear that this is an important moment for Cheviot Learning Trust, one that calls for careful thinking about the next stage of our development and how we best serve the schools and communities that depend on us. The national landscape is changing, and the board has been thoughtful in creating space to consider what that means for Cheviot Learning Trust. I feel privileged to play a part in that, and I look forward to hearing everyone’s views.”
The Board of Trustees has made the decision to appoint an Interim CEO to allow Cheviot Learning Trust an 18-month period to provide an opportunity for the Trust to carefully consider its next stage of development. This can include exploring future partnerships with other trusts and schools. Throughout the period, the Trust will continue to ensure that it delivers excellent education for all pupils.
Glen will play a key role in supporting the Board during this important period of reflection and strategic planning. His strong understanding of Cheviot’s schools and culture, combined with his leadership experience, will help ensure the Trust continues to meet the needs of its communities while remaining focused on high-quality education and support for students.
To ensure a smooth and effective transition, Glen will work alongside current CEO Alice Witherow throughout her final term. He will shadow her in the role, meeting key stakeholders, school leaders and partners across the Trust, and contributing to important discussions and appointments ahead of formally taking up the position in September.
Alice Witherow said:
“I am delighted to be handing the role of CEO over to Glen Whitehead. Having worked closely with him over the last three years as he led Chantry Middle School, I know that he will bring with him his passion for high-quality education for all and an ability to work in the best interests of children and young people. It is an immense privilege to have had this opportunity and I wish Glen and the Cheviot team every success as they move forward.”
With Glen’s appointment and the planned transition period in place, Cheviot Learning Trust looks forward to continuing to build on its strengths and working collaboratively with its schools, communities and partners as we enter our next chapter.
