Back Home at Prudhoe Community High School

This September marks a very special month for everyone at one of our schools, Prudhoe Community High School. All pupils and staff are returning to Prudhoe!

Starting September 9th, all students can return to the PCHS building after having to shut down temporarily last school year.

From moving an entire school’s worth of equipment and furniture to making the Washington campus feel like home, the PCHS community pulled together to make sure learning carried on.

Sunderland College, the Department for Education, Northumberland County Council, and so many commercial suppliers went above and beyond to support the school. Even the bus drivers became part of the PCHS community, ensuring our students arrived safely, keeping spirits high during early mornings and long journeys through all of the A1 traffic.

Annmarie Moore, Headteacher at PCHS, said, “We have unpacked over 800 crates and set our classrooms up and ready for learning. Following what has been a very challenging year for our school community, we are so pleased to return to Prudhoe. The school has been painted and cleaned, and we are ready for an exciting year ahead.”

We would like to say a huge thank you to our students and families for your patience, adaptability, and trust in PCHS. We are also incredibly grateful to our staff for their effort, commitment, and care.

And now, after months of hard work, repairs, and preparation, the Prudhoe site is ready once again. While Washington gave PCHS a temporary home and a lot of memories, there’s something very special about pupils and staff being back where they belong. Coming back to Prudhoe marks a fresh start for everyone at PCHS during this exciting new chapter!

Headteacher Annmarie Moore also comments on results at PCHS, despite the change in location. “Examination results at both GCSE and A Level have continued to be excellent. A higher proportion of our students achieved grade A* in  A Levels compared to schools regionally and nationally. Over 90% of students secured their first choice of university. GCSE results were also excellent with almost 80% of students achieving grades 4 and above in English, and similarly in mathematics. Over 50% of all grades were grade 5 and above and 85% of students achieved a grade 4 or above in English or mathematics. We are incredibly proud of our achievements in all subject areas, including our vocational subjects.”

Local County Councillor Gordon Stewart, who represents Prudhoe South ward where PCHS is located, gives his full support as the students return to their studies.

"It is fantastic news that the School is back providing excellent education for our young people in their home town. The School is a huge part of the local community, where everyone has rallied around to show their support."

For Year 11 students, PCHS is also looking forward to welcoming many back to PCHS Sixth Form. Students who have chosen other pathways but are reconsidering their options still have until the end of September to apply and join PCHS for this next stage of their learning journey.

Here’s to a new school year filled with opportunity, growth, and achievement right here in Prudhoe.
